Ultrasound Probes & Transducers: Types, Compatibility & Buying Used (2026)

Used ultrasound transducer probes for sale UK
At a glance
  • The probe (transducer) does the imaging — the console just processes it.
  • Four main types: convex (abdominal), linear (vascular/MSK), phased-array (cardiac), endocavity.
  • Probes are brand- and model-specific: a Philips probe fits listed Philips systems only.
  • A used probe costs a fraction of new — but only if it matches your system.

Here is a truth every sonographer knows: the probe is the instrument. The console is a computer; the transducer in your hand is where image quality is made — and where budgets are broken, because a single new replacement probe can cost thousands. The used market fixes that, with one iron rule: compatibility first.

The four probe types, decoded

Convex (curved) probes use lower frequencies for deep penetration — the abdominal and general-imaging workhorse. Linear probes run higher frequencies for crisp, shallow detail — vascular access, MSK, small parts. Phased-array probes have a small footprint that fits between ribs — the cardiac choice. Endocavity probes are built for transvaginal and transrectal exams. Match the type to the exam before you shop.

Why compatibility is everything

Probes are not interchangeable between brands, and often not between models of the same brand. The connector, the software handshake and the tuning are all system-specific. A Philips C5-1, for example, pairs with Philips systems such as the iU22, iE33, EPIQ and Affiniti — not with a GE or Mindray console. Before buying any used probe, check your console's supported-transducer list, or simply tell us your system model and we will confirm the match.

What to check before you buy

Three things: compatibility (the listing should name your console), condition (probes with damaged lenses or crystal dropout produce image artefacts — ask about testing), and the connector (undamaged pins, correct type). It is the buyer's responsibility to disinfect and test any probe before clinical use — particularly endocavity probes, which require high-level disinfection.
