Importing Used Medical Equipment from the UK: A Practical Guide for Overseas Buyers (2026)

At a glance
  • UK ex-NHS stock is prized worldwide for quality, brands and English documentation.
  • Check your country's rules on used/refurbished devices before ordering.
  • Many markets require pre-shipment inspection (PSI) or conformity certificates.
  • Confirm voltage (UK is 230V/50Hz), plugs and local consumable availability.

Some of our most enthusiastic buyers are not in the UK at all. Hospitals, clinics and equipment dealers across Africa, the Middle East, Asia and beyond source used medical equipment from Britain because ex-NHS stock is trusted: it is well-maintained, from recognised global brands, and comes with English-language documentation. If you are buying from overseas, here is how to do it smoothly.

Why buy from the UK?

The NHS runs one of the largest, best-maintained medical equipment fleets in the world, and its decommissioned surplus is exactly the kind of proven, clinical-grade kit that developing and expanding healthcare markets need — at a fraction of new prices. Popular exports include dialysis machines, neonatal incubators, patient monitors and ultrasound machines.

Step 1: Check your country's import rules first

This is the step that catches people out. Rules on importing used or refurbished medical devices vary enormously by country. Some markets allow refurbished imports with the same registration as new; others restrict or prohibit certain used devices; and many require a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) or a conformity certificate before the goods can clear customs. Check with your national medical-device regulator or a customs broker before you order — it is far cheaper than a shipment stuck at the border.

Step 2: Shipping & freight

Small items ship by tracked, insured courier. Larger machines (dialysis units, incubators, imaging) usually go by air or sea freight, often palletised. We can arrange or advise on freight; ask for a shipping quote with the destination country and port, and whether you need door-to-door or port-to-port.

Step 3: Customs, duties & documentation

As the importer, you are typically responsible for import duties, taxes and clearance in the destination country. We provide a commercial invoice and the documentation we hold for each unit; you (or your broker) handle clearance. Tell us if you need specific paperwork for your regulator.

Step 4: Practical compatibility checks

Two quick but important ones: power (the UK runs on 230V / 50Hz with a Type G plug — confirm the equipment suits your mains, or budget for a converter) and consumables (make sure the dialysers, leads, cuffs, probes or filters the machine needs are available locally). A great-value machine is only great if you can run it.

Step 5: Decontamination, testing & compliance

As with any used medical device anywhere, it is the buyer's responsibility to medically decontaminate, service, calibrate and test equipment before clinical use, by suitably qualified personnel and in line with local standards.
